Ramadan ; Month of Virtues

Ramadan, one of the months in the Islamic calendar, was also part of ancient Arabs' calendars. The naming of Ramadan stems from the Arabic root “ar-ramad,” which means scorching heat.

Muslims believe that in A.D. 610, the angel Gabriel appeared to Prophet Muhammad and revealed to him the Quran, the Islamic holy book.

- Who started Ramadan and why?

• "Prophet Muhammad"

The surviving Muslims migrated to the city of Medina in 622 AD, over 300km away.

Two years later, the verses about fasting in Ramadan were revealed, with Prophet Muhammad establishing the holy month's practices in the sanctuary of their new home.

- What is the main purpose of Ramadan?

• Muslims observe the month of Ramadan, to mark that Allah, or God, gave the first chapters of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad in 610, according to the Times of India.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast, abstain from pleasures and pray to become closer to God. It is also a time for families to gather and celebrate.

- What does the Quran say about Ramadan?

• The Quran says that it was during Ramadan that its revelation took place: “The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.” 2:185.

Many think that Ramadan is a month of fasting and giving charity

- Which countries celebrate Ramadan?

• For the observant members of Germany's Muslim community, the fast of Ramadan will have many similarities to holiday celebrations in Turkey, Iraq, Iran and other Islamic countries.

- what are the 3 reasons why Ramadan is important?

• Muslims believe that Ramadan teaches them to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate, thus encouraging actions of generosity and compulsory charity (zakat).

- what are the rules of Ramadan?

• During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk — yes, even water.

When the sun sets, there is a communal meal called 'Iftar' where you break your fast, usually with your family or friends
